Cole Truck & Haul have been operating their business since the mid 1980s. For more than twenty years they've been delivering goods for most major industries in the nation, with business booming as they traversed the country, in all kinds of weather, for all kinds of clients. During the heady times from 2002 to 2007, Cole was a top rated accounts receivable mastermind of the trucking industry. Very few customers were behind on their bills, and those customers who were late turned in their overdue payments within an acceptable time frame. The money was flowing, and times were great. But a short year later, in the fall of 2008, when the United States economy took a nosedive and businesses both small and large began to feel the pinch on their pocketbooks, those that used to make their demands had suddenly and largely gone silent. Business slowed down. Worse still, it was noticed by Cole in early 2008 that even though most of their loyal customers were on time with their payments, there were a few late bloomers who were starting to spread the disease. And as spring turmed to summer and summer into the early days of fall, Nathan Lambert, CEO of Cole felt a chill go down his spine whenever he would look at the weekly A/R reports. There was a growing list of clients who now owed them back debt.He had gone to his administrators and asked them what the problem had been. Were they doing something wrong or different when it came to reaching out to delinquent accounts? By his bookkeepers records, this wasn't the case. Perhaps he was losing his customers to his competitor, who seemed to offer very low prices with no guarantee of quality or performance, and these clients who were in debt to his company had possibly disappeared leaving him stranded. They couldn't afford to pay him their debt, but they could afford a lesser service, maybe. So he did the necessary research and, after discussions with friends in the same field, he realised that no, his customers hadn't gone anywhere else. The had just gone!.This current state-of-affairs was causing Nathan Lambert to have some very restless nights. There were goods to ship, employees to pay, trucks to repair and maintain, and continuous overheads that were very extensive when compared to the funds (or lack of) that were incoming. After work he would confide in his wife, Tracy, and neither were unable to stop the constant worry over the lack of funds.""I have a bad feeling, Lin,"" he'd sadly say to his wife.""What could you do differently?"" she would say.Nathan would stare off into the distance, and then slowly close his eyes. He could see the fleet of trucks he had purchased over the years. He could see them traveling, bringing goods to all of his clients. But somewhere, a haze would form over his fleet and the vast number of vehicles would disappear to but a few. Why couldnt he work out how to resolve this financial problem with his business?""I know what it is,"" said Nathan. ""For way too long I've been relying solely on profits received from invoices. I've let too many of our customers go too long without paying on their bills."" Tracy would look at her husband lovingly, and holding his hand would say 'It's such a harsh economy these days and our clients must be having difficulty meeting their responsibilities'.""Tracy was trying so hard to support her husband in these worrying times, while Nathan was weighed down with the worry of how he was going to handle this situation he found himself in.The next day Nathan strolled into his office and was determined to sit down and make every phone call to every client who had owed Cole money. Now, it wasn't the most efficient way to spend a day as a chief executive, what he really needed to be doing was to be overseeing all of the other intricacies of shipment and delivery and reaching out to prospective clients or retraining his sales team to do the same. Even though he was doing something to help his company, he knew he had folks on salary to do just this thing. A waste of time - a waste of money - he had the best intentions, but all the while Nathan was realising just how much trouble he was in.After a half day of contacting debtors in vain - they dodged his calls or promised to call back at worst or made minimal interest-only payments at best - he was about to throw in the towel when his secretary Julieerley knocked at his door.

""Can I have a word with you Nathan?"" she queried, standing in the doorway.

""Of course Julie, please come in."" Nathan leaned back in his chair and looked expectantly at Julieerely.""Well Nathan, this afternoon I did some research, trying to work out how we're going to get out of this mess."" She opened up a folder she had been carrying and pulled out a small wad of papers, placing them on the desk in front of him.""Have you ever heard of factoring?"" Julieerley asked.""It does sound vaguely familiar. What is it?"" he said. She began, ""Well, it's really very simple. So basically, factoring invoices would enable us to get paid on the nose for loads that we haul.""Nathan interrupted ""Immediately?"".""Yes, immediately,"" she continued, ""In a nutshell, it's pretty easy. We can have an expert account manager review our numbers and help us complete a company profile. That profile will also include investigating our accounts receivable aging reports, our existing customer credit limits and so on. Additionally, the factoring will help to determine the creditworthiness of our customers independent of their credit history with our business. It provides a very broad view.Nathan replied cautiously ""I see - and what happens then?Well, after their review, and were approved for a factoring contract, we can negotiate terms and conditions. Theres a lot of flexibility depending on the business volume and credit histories. This company tells us what the cost will be to purchase factoring for our accounts receivable. Once we arrive at a mutual agreement, the funding begins.Nathan was still a little concerned. He leaned forward in his chair and studied the paperwork very closely.""I don't know, Julie - it just sounds too good to be true"", Nathan said quietly.""Now, now, I know, I thought the same thing. But really, they have guaranteed us experts that do all the legwork, which would free us up here to focus on our clients in good standing and marketing, all that good stuff. And they're flexible Nathan,"" she underlined a paragraph on the paper before him.""Just how flexible?"" he asked.""It seems that they personalize their factoring charges so that the amount they're prepared to work with is commensurate with our client's debt and our needs. It only takes 2 to 4 days for this to be figured out. """"That sounds pretty good, seeing as we tapped ourselves out with bank loans last year to repair the fleet and money sure is tight. It's imperative that we keep the business rolling as usual, and every day we go unpaid we're getting closer and closer to dealing with some serious issues in both the short term and the long term,"" said Nathan. He took a deep breath and looked at his secretary with something she recognized as hope.""Precisely. I think this might just be a way out of the trouble we're in with these folks who owe us money.""Nathan took a moment to think about this solution, and agreed with his secretary. The clients who owed them money were long standing friends and professional resources of Cole. They didn't want to throw away these relationships because they were having trouble paying their bills now. Nathan knew that the economy had taken a hit and he knew that it would probably be a long time before things started to look up again. If he didn't handle these debtors in the right way, that unknown amount of time could spell disaster for all of them. He didn't want to lose business but he also didn't want to lose any more money.""Well, let me think about this tonight Julie, thank you."" Julie nodded, stood up and left the office feeling that she had helped her employer keep on his shirt and hers too.Nathan stayed at his desk for a long time, looking over the details they hadn't discussed during their meeting. He wondered if there might be other problems freight factoring could help Cole Truck & Haul with? With his pencil gliding down the sheet he noticed that the factoring company could help fray the cost of fuel with fuel discount cards and fuel advances. Nathan was surprised: it said that his company could get up to fifty percent cash advances on load pickups. As a man who hated binding contracts with no room to breathe, he was pleased to see that this factoring company would not make him sign a long term contract, would not make him pay any sign up fees and there was no minimum volume required.""Well, I'll have to tell Allan about this,"" Nathan muttered to himself.Nathan's son-in-law, Allan, loved the idea behind Cole and highly respected his father-in-law for having such great business sense, that two years ago he got his capital together and started his own transportation company. Nathan knew then what struggles Allan would face but he encouraged him nonetheless. With the economy the way it was, if an established company such as Cole was struggling then the little guys, like Allan, were going to be in even more trouble. But, maybe the answer for both of them was in freight factoring, and Nathan was going to find out very soon.A few short months later, after completing the application process, having the legal experts review his credit history, accounts receivable, and statements, finally Nathan was beginning to find his way out of the hole his debtors had created for him. They took on reasonable factoring purchase contracts and stopped spending their precious man hours scrambling to collect debt. They used that time to refocus their efforts in being competitive in new territories. Nathan looked back on the dismal months of life before freight factoring and almost shuddered at the thought. Had he missed the boat on this one, he probably wouldn't be in business today.

Factoring in the Future of a Trucking Business: A Story The phone was ringing on his desk, and Edward Martinez just sat there letting it ring. He let his morning coffee cool and left his cigarette to ash itself in the tray, because he is trying to make the biggest decision ever for his trucking company. Martinez Trucking Company had reached a turning point and he now had to make a decision as to whether he should sign up with a factoring company, and indeed if this would be a good or regrettable decision for his business.

More than forty years ago Edward's father had started this business working as an owner-operator and eventually growing Martinez Trucking Company into a fifteen trailer fleet. Yes, they had survived some very difficult times when it appeared like they might go under, and even Edward's mother had jumped into the cab at times to make hauls. His father had worked long enough to see the price of hires drop dramatically during the recession and to see the explosion of fuel prices afterwards. But now things were different: the company was in Edward's hands and he needed to ensure that this business would be left in great shape for his sons.

There just never seemed to be enough money to go around, and certainly no spare cash, but to move his company successfully into the future he needed a steady and reliable cash flow. He had employees to pay. They had families and household bills too. Some of the refrigerated trailers were in need of repairs and he felt to stay competitive it was also a good idea to invest in specialized haulers to be ready for the constant requests he was getting for loads of new energy and agriculture equipment. Every time he had to turn down a request, Martinez Trucking looked weak in a very strong market.

His father would have told him to wait and to take his time adding on new technology. Edward allowed himself a good hard chuckle. He remembered when his father was totally against installing GPS units in the cabs. He would say, Why do you need the voice of some woman to tell you to get off at an exit that has been the same exit that has been there for years? Also his father had the habit of teasing all the drivers he caught switching into automatic even though driving in automatic was much more efficient though not manly in his fathers eyes. He knew his father's days were long gone and new technology was very important for the business, like having Qualcomm to reduce communication time for bills of lading.

Edward knew he was right in his forward thinking. What would be the next step for Martinez Trucking? More importantly, how could he afford it? Funding was all tied up in the mortgage for the office and garage and in the fuel bills. Thankfully he'd just finished paying off the bank loan for the installation of satellite radio in the trucks.

But was factoring the answer? There was a lot he didnt understand about the process. It sounded a lot like ninth grade algebra which just didnt feel like it belonged as part of the trucking business. Factoring companies buy your invoices and manage your accounts receivable for a certain percentage of the invoiced amount. The factoring company gives the trucking business its payment right away which allows the business to have continuous cash flow so it can pay employees, buy fuel, and make repairs for upcoming hauls. Without this assistance, you're placed in the position of waiting for payment from your customers, and this can often be thirty days, or more. In those 30 days, a trucking company cant pay its bills and employees in invoices.

Now it was time for Edward to do his homework. Edward had heard that there were companies that charged for same day money transfers and would only advance a percentage of the money owed to your company while holding the rest in a private account if they didnt get their bill payment within 60 or so days. Plus it was worse still if the customer didnt pay up at all because then the factoring company would take it right out of the money supposed to be coming to you! Through the grapevine, hed also heard about how some companies suddenly slipped you onto a sliding scale of percentages even if you had already signed a lengthy contract for maybe 3% or 7% so there you are with 10% coming as a cost to you out of the freight bill. His friend Ronnie who had a trucking business in Missouri, was run nearly into the ground by a factoring company that charged him the full freight bill on top of the factoring fees. Well, what was the point of going to a factoring company if there was shady business like that going on?

But it turned out to be quite easy. When he called the factoring companies he discovered they were very open about their business practices, and very friendly and helpful. Their customer service actually knew things about their company and spoke in nice clear English so he could understand what was being explained. He didnt mind signing an exclusive contract. He liked the idea of a long term commitment so he knew he wouldnt have to bother going back and forth to different companies and wasting time filing more forms. He was not charged for a credit check, and in addition he was offered a fuel advance on the pick-up of a load. In fact there were a few companies who offered him a non-recourse factoring program, and this was exactly what he had been hoping for. He was more than happy with the figures he was offered in percentage terms on the freight bills. It sounded like a great scheme to him.

It was really refreshing dealing with the factoring people. They were more personable than those loan managers at the bank. He was relieved to note that the factoring companies understood the trucking business and discussed business with him like a respected client, not like someone looking for a handout. The factoring companies didnt worry over his credit and the debt troubles his father had had in the past of the company. All the factoring company was interest in was the credit of his customers and on their reliability: this worked great for Edward because he and his father had created a very strong and loyal list of clientele over the years. He knew immediately that there would not be any problems when they were contacted by the factoring company regarding their invoices. His clients wouldn't have any problems, nor would they think poorly of Martinez Trucking, because the factoring companies handle themselves in such a polite and professional manner, similar to the way his father had managed the business in the past.

Edward stepped out of his office to let his secretary know to expect the arrival of the factoring contract shortly. There was a new bounce is his step now: he knew instinctively that this new step would raise the future of his company to a new and higher level, and that all the stress from the past could now be put behind him. He suddenly realized that, with this new cash flow, he could actually expand Martinez Trucking Company and who knows, move into Canada, which had always been his dream. He was a happy man again knowing that he had just made a decision which would guarantee the success of his business and his sons wouldn't be inheriting a financial mess.

Trucking Factoring  Articles

So It is not a loan? Andy Sanders asked as he leaned back in his chair, crossing his legs. The woman sitting across the desk from Andy smiled at him, shaking her head. No, not exactly, she stated.Andy was the owner of a small trucking company which had fallen on some hard times recently. Trucking could be a profitable business, and for a little under a decade, it had been for Andre. He named his business Bryant Trucking, named after Tracy and Herbert, his two grandfathers. Both of these men had been very hardworking and had set a great example for Andre.Disaster had struck half a year ago, when two trucks in Andres fifteen truck fleet went down. One was involved in a very costly accident, and the other simply rolled over, and headed to the trucking graveyard. The financial security of Andre's company relied on his full fleet on fifteen being on the road, and missing two trucks was just devastating . Furthermore, buying a whole new truck and fixing the other simply took more cash than Andy had on hand.Paying of bills in the trucking industry is always a major cause for concern for businesses.

Waiting a month or longer for bills to be paid was quite normal. In the long run, this wasnt an issue, but if problems arose, you could find yourself in trouble.Andy wasnt a bad owner, and he hadnt messed up. Things had happened that he couldn't have predicted, and he had to figure out a way to keep his business from hurting, or even going under. And that's why he found himself across the desk from this woman. Her name was Nellie and she worked for a factoring company. Andy had come across her company as he sat in his office late one night, pouring over the internet for some solution to his problem long after his employees had gone home. She sat there now, and explained. Its not a loan, we purchase your accounts receivable. We arent giving you money to be paid back later, were buying something from you, and you can buy it back when you can. That way were protected from a complete loss, but youre protected from the outrageous fees you would find in a loan from the bank.Andy nodded. It sounded good to him, almost too good.Nellie laughed. You look like you dont believe me, she chuckled.Oh no, I do: it just sounds too good to be true. I thought I was going to lose my company.Nellie smiled, agreeing. We get that a lot. There's no way we want to see you lose your business. We know how hard you work, and that you've invested everything in your business. We all need help sometimes. That's why we do what we do.In any case, thank you for coming to see me.Its right down the road, usually we do it all online, but I didnt mind swinging on by today, said Nellie with a smile. Lets see what we can do to help you.And with that they set about making a profile.

Andy completed the form, with Nellie offering advice as needed.

The profile filled Nellie and her company in on Andres company, and would help them determine if he was suitable for factoring. Unfortunately, not all companies are. Some businesses are beyond the help of a Factoring company, while other businesses weren't in enough financial stress to warrant it. Listening as Andy filled out his form, Nellie was pretty sure he was a perfect candidate for factoring. When the form was done Nellie took it and slid it into her briefcase. She then stood, reached across the desk and shook Andres hand. He stood before they shook as well, and then smiled. Andy walked Nellie to the door where they said 'Goodbye', then he went back into his office. All his staff members were there, all seven who worked in his office. Sitting behind his desk once more he could hear the familiar sounds of his office workers going about their daily business. He shut his eyes. He had felt so helpless lately, was sure the whole thing was collapsing, and would take him with it. But now, after speaking to Nellie and learning all about Factoring, he felt such a huge relief, like someone had just lifted a huge weight off his shoulders. He sat back in his chair and ran a hand through his graying but still thick black hair. All those long, sleepless nights. The terrifying panic attacks that occurred regardless of where he was. He could feel it all fading away. He knew it wasn't over yet and that there was still a way to go, but he could just feel everything start to change for him. He was still here; he knew this was the right path for him, and he felt proud that he had taken the appropriate steps to sort out his problems. His mind wandered back to the very beginning, when he first started his business. At twenty-two and straight out of school he had opened a restaurant. It had been successful. Offering home cooking in his own hometown, his business had really prospered. But he had gotten bored. His passion didnt lie with the food industry. He thought long and hard, and then he decided to sell the restaurant. He took six months off, and during that time he decided to create Bryant Trucking. And that's exactly what he did. For the second time in his short life he created a company from the ground up. The business had been an instant success. And then the trucks went down, and his success looked to be in flux. He was nearing fifty. He didnt think he had it in him, to save this company. But he couldnt give up. The idea of cutting his losses, shutting down, laying off his workers, it actually made him sick some nights. He didnt know how to say quit. And now it seemed as though he wouldn't have to - all because of Factoring. Andy opened his eyes, sat forward, turned his computer on. He had lots to do. He could be thankful later, for now, it was time to work.

With this form of setup, invoice factoring can end up being remarkably valuable for plenty of establishments who need to avoid a cash ploy which they have found themselves in.

Simply because, depending on the volume of the project, it can take up to 60 days for many business enterprises to get paid then it's crucial to blanket your own back and not leave yourself funds short to pay off the bills. After all, how many business enterprises possess two months revenue just lying there to pay for all their expenses until they make money?

This is most notably correct of truck agencies. They tend to manage good deals of statements which means a considerable amount of collection period concerns company owner themselves. Striving to get paid promptly can develop into an incredible inconvenience and this is the reason why you employ trucking factoring firms who are glad to help out truckers primarily.

As all of us realize, trucking is an amazingly big business with a lot of agencies out there utilizing hundreds of vehicle drivers. Unfortunately, plenty of these drivers end up in finances issues for the reason that they are still waiting on work from six weeks back to actually pay them. When this is the case for a truck business, resorting to factoring providers for assistance may be the best alternative left.

This signifies that a trucking business can pay off the paychecks of the workers, keep all the vehicles filled with fuel and continue to go up, rise and expand without constantly waiting for the finances which is taking too long to come in. Trucking Business enterprises operating without a factoring system used are leaving themselves at notable danger, as rivals cash out quickly and go on to broaden.

There's genuinely not a thing to be troubled about when it comes to making use of a Factoring establishment-- they usually are not like a financial institution or an individual who is going to leave you with a big stack of financial obligation to repay. You give them genuine invoices from output you have already accomplished , you are merely facilitating the payment system.

In the Usa, where truck companies succeed, factoring firms are not considered getting a loan in any capacity. This confidential agreement then lets both parties to profit and take joy in a comfortable future-- it gives the factoring company a guaranteed asset of income to include in the list and it supplies the trucking business the needed finances that they worked hard to obtain.

The trucking business gives their invoices to the factoring company. The trucking factoring company then acquire the payment amounts from the trucking company's customers. Factoring has been in existence for centuries and has been adopted for long times by a lot of varying business sectors-- but none much more so than truckers. Traditional Bank Loans

Finance through a bank loan is the normal, or traditional, way of financing your business. While these loans are handy they are not available to every business. As an example, a newly formed business may not have the required assets to qualify for a bank loan, and even if they did, it's usual practise for a bank to use the business itself as collateral. This means that if you default on your loan payment you could lose your entire business. In addition, while you apply for a certain loan amount, that is all the financing you are entitled to. Once the loan is paid off, you can then apply for another loan if the need arises.

What Are Trucking Factoring Companies?

Trucking Factoring companies don't offer loans, and you don't go into debt when you get money from a Trucking Factoring company. Rather the financing you receive from a Trucking Factoring company is based on money your business has already earned, but have not yet received. The Trucking Factoring company purchases your accounts receivable, or part of them, for a certain percentage of their value - this is normally about 80-95%. The amount of money you can receive is based on the amount of money you have earned and the accounts receivable you are willing to sell. Once a Trucking Factoring account has been created for you, it will continue for as long as you need it, with the money available continuing to grow as your business grows, and providing cash as you require it.

What Are The Benefits Of A Trucking Factoring Company Versus A Traditional Bank Loan?

Not every business can benefit from Trucking Factoring account financing because you have to have a business with accounts receivable, however there are many benefits for those who can access this type of finance.

1. There is no debt. You don't incur debt as you do with a bank loan because the Trucking Factoring company actually purchases your accounts receivable. This has many benefits including the fact, that this type of financing won't affect either your business credit rating or your personal credit rating. In the event that your business fails, you wouldn't have to be concerned about someone coming after your personal or your business assets in order to pay off a loan. With a bank loan, the debt goes onto your credit report, and even one late payment can adversely affect your businesses credit, and even the ability to get insurance and may even reflect upon your personal credit rating.

2. No Collateral Required. Another great benefit of using the services of a Trucking Factoring company instead of a bank loan is that there is no collateral required for the Trucking Factoring company, because the Trucking Factoring company is 'buying' your accounts receivables. Plus, the state of your credit rating is not an issue; however the Trucking Factoring company will run a credit check on your clients whose accounts receivable are being offered for financing. This makes it easier for fledgling businesses to get the financing they need through a Trucking Factoring company (as long as their accounts receivables are in good order) then from a bank, who may not feel that you have been in business long enough to be worth the risk of issuing you a loan.

3. Receive Your Money Faster. With a Trucking Factoring company you can actually get the money you need faster. Once the Trucking Factoring company assures itself that the customers in your accounts receivable are likely to pay their debt, the money is usually in the account within 24 hours. With a bank, there are vast amounts of paperwork, then the loan has to be underwritten, which can take months before you actually see the loan if it is approved.

4.Interest is Paid Up Front. With a bank loan interest continues to build, and this has to be paid the whole time you have a business loan; however with a Trucking Factoring company there is no interest - they take it right off the top by deducting it from the total amount of receivable accounts. So you don't have to worry about monthly loan repayments, and you don't have to worry about the amount of interest payable, because all the money in the account is yours to spend.

As you can see, there are several benefits that makes considering financing through a Trucking Factoring company over a traditional bank worthwhile. In addition, there are other benefits that a Trucking Factoring company can offer you, outside the scope of a bank. The most important benefits is that once you sell your accounts receivable to the factory company, you don't have to take time away from running your business to collect the money owed from reluctant to pay customers. The Trucking Factoring company takes over that chore, since it is now their money to collect. Trucking Factoring companies are very efficient at debt collecting, and this frees up your valuable time to devote to running your company.

In addition, since the Trucking Factoring company evaluates the credit quality of your customers prior to purchasing the accounts receivable you gain valuable information into which customers are likely to pay and which ones are not so likely to pay. While a Trucking Factoring company is not the only way for your business to obtain the money it needs to keep growing, it does offer a type of financing well worth considering.
